Prayer: Prayer to Saint Dominic

Wonderful Saintly Founder of the eloquent Order of Preachers and friend of Saint Francis of Assisi, you were a fiery defender of the Faith and a fighter against the darkness of heresy. You resembled a great star that shone close to the world and pointed to the Light which was Christ. Help astronomers to study the stars and admire their wonderful Maker, proclaiming: "Give glory to God in the highest." Amen.

Name: PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL
Prayer: The following prayer was composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 and is offered for the private recitation of the faithful in accord with the decree of Inde Ab Aliquot Annis of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, September 29, 1985.

Original Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

Glorious Prince of the Celestial Host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the conflict which we have to sustain against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places (Eph 6:12). Come to the rescue of men whom God has redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. It is thou whom Holy Church venerates as her guardian and her protector; thou whom the Lord has charged to conduct redeemed souls into Heaven. Pray therefore, the God of peace, to subdue Satan beneath our feet, that he may no longer retain men captive nor do injury to the Church. Present our prayers to the Most High, that without delay they may draw His mercy down upon us. Seize "the dragon, the ancient serpent, which is the devil and Satan," bind him and "cast him into the bottomless pit .. that he may no longer seduce the nations." (Rev 20:2-3)

Name: LIVING ACCORDING TO GODS SCHEDULE
Prayer: LIVING ACCORDING TO GOD'S SCHEDULE by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade, S.J.

Why do you take such pleasure in tormenting yourself, as you do, over the future, when your faith teaches you that the future is in the hands of a Father who is infinitely good, who loves you more than you love yourself and who understands your interests far better than you? Have you forgotten that everything that happens is directed by the orders of Divine Providence? But if we know this how can we hesitate to remain in a humble state of submission, in the most trifling as in the greatest events, to all that God wishes or permits? How blind we are when we desire anything other than what God wishes. He alone knows the dangers which threaten us in the future and the help we shall need. I am firmly convinced that we should all be lost if God gave us all our desires, and that is why, as St. Augustine says, "God, in His Mercy, and compassion for our blindness, does not always grant our prayers, and sometimes gives us the contrary of what we ask as being in reality better for us." In truth, I often think that nearly all of us are in this world in the position of poor sick people who in their frenzy or delirium as for the very thing that would cause their death and who have to be refused out of pure charity and enlightened pity.

My God, if this truth were once for all well known, with what blind self-abandonment should we not submit ourselves to your Divine Providence. What peace and tranquility of heart we should enjoy in every circumstance, not only regarding eternal events, but also with reference to our interior states of soul. Even in cases where the painful vicissitudes through which God makes us pass are a punishment for our infidelities, we should say to ourselves that God ha s willed it thus by His permissive will, and we must humbly submit.

Name: BLESSINGS OF GOD
Prayer: BLESSINGS OF GOD by Saint Mark the Ascetic

You should continually and unceasingly call to mind all the blessings that God in His love has bestowed upon you in the past, and still bestows for the salvation of your soul. You must not let forgetfulness of evil or laziness make you grow unmindful of these many and great blessings, and so pass the rest of you life uselessly and ungratefully. For this kind of continual recollection moves the heart constantly to confession and humility, to thanksgiving with a contrite soul, and to all forms of sincere effort, repaying God through its virtue and holiness. In this way the he meditates constantly and conscientiously on the words from the Psalms: “What shall I give to the Lord in return for all His benefits towards me?” (Ps 116:12). Thus the soul recalls the blessings of God’s love which it has received from the moment it came into existence: how it has often been delivered from dangers; how in spite of having often fallen by its own free choice into great evil and sins, it was not justly given up to destruction and death at the hands of the spirits of deception; and how God with long-suffering overlooked its offences and protected it, awaiting its return. It also recalls that although through the passions it had become the willing servant of hostile malicious spirits, he sustained it, guarding it, and in all ways providing for it; and finally that he guided it with a clear sign to the path of salvation.

Name: Psalm 51
Prayer: Misere

Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy steadfast love; according to thy abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4* Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in thy sight, so that thou art justified in thy sentence and blameless in thy judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Fill* me with joy and gladness; let the bones which thou hast broken rejoice. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right* spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners will return to thee. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, * O God, thou God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of thy deliverance. 15 O Lord, open thou my lips, and my mouth shall show forth thy praise. 16 For thou hast no delight in sacrifice; were I to give a burnt offering, thou wouldst not be pleased. 17 The sacrifice acceptable to God* is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. 18 Do good to Zion in thy good pleasure; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, 19 then wilt thou delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on thy altar.

We must be detached from ourselves because all our being and all our happiness depends, not on us, but on God, according to the words of our Lord: "He that loves his life shall lose it, and he that hates his life shall keep it unto life eternal. (Jn 12:25) -- St. Ignatius Loyola

Prayer: August 7

Self-love, esteem of ourselves and false liberty of spirit are roots that are not easily eradicated from our hearts. We cannot stop them from producing sinful fruits. As long as we are in this life, we cannot even totally prevent the first shoots and branches; namely, the first indications and the first acts. We can only moderate them and lessen their number and influence by the practice of contrary virtues, especially the virtue of the love of God. (Letters 1173; O. XVII, p. 60)

Name: STRONGHOLDS OF THE MIND
Prayer: “Strongholds of the Mind” by Mother Nadine Brown

We can have many kinds of thoughts. There can be false guilt. There is a good sense of guilt, but there is also false guilt. There can be self-condemnation. There will always be things that will make us think less of ourselves. Satan works that way in our minds, whereas God will always build us up. He’ll always affirm us. He does correct, reprove, and chastise us but it’s done with such love that it won’t break us. It won’t shatter us. God will never put us down. So when you begin to see that you’re going down, know that your thought life is in trouble.

Strongholds in our thinking patterns can be so hidden that we don’t even recognize them as evil. We need the power of the Holy Spirit constantly. “Show me, show me, show me. Let me see the fruit of this. Let me see what this action produced.” Sometimes the only way that we are able to detect if there’s something else within ourselves is by the fruit it produces. We may see that our actions are not bearing good fruit or the fruits of the Spirit. Bottom line, the fruit of the Spirit will always be Jesus.

For example, when our thought life is in agreement with unbelief, if that’s how we’re thinking, if we constantly have fear, if we’re in habitual sin, then the enemy will rest in that. There won’t even be any manifestations of His presence because he’s totally at home because we’ve made him at home. Often we’re so comfortable with these thought patterns that we’re not even aware that we’ve given him an environment to rest in. But once we become aware of them, then there will be a period of wrestling with them because the enemy has a stronghold. A stronghold means that he has a strong hold. He isn’t going to want to go. So we need to wrestle with him for some time especially if the hold is strong. We are wrestling to remove his power and his lies from our mind with the truth of God. We are bringing every thought that exalts itself against God into captivity. We are bringing every thought into captivity that in any way goes against God, Scripture, the teachings of the Church, or authentic authority. We need to look at each of these areas. If our thoughts are going counter to that, then we need to bring them into captivity with Jesus.

How do we do this? We can look objectively at any thought or attitude that does not conform to the likeness of Jesus or His teachings. We have to look at our thoughts objectively. If we look at it subjectively, then we’re not going to see it because we can talk ourselves into or out of anything. We have to look at this thought pattern or this attitude objectively. Does it conform to the teachings of Jesus? If not, we have a power to do something about it. We can take authority over it right away. Scripture refers to this as binding and loosening ( see Mt 16:19). We command it to go, and we ask God to come with His truth. Or if you prefer, ask God to come with truth, and it will go. We can bind it and make it inactive so that it will not be speaking to our mind and “inspiring” us. Then when the Holy Spirit comes, He can throw it out. His perfect Love, the Spirit of Truth, will take care of it. So we call on Him—we can’t do it alone.

We might have a stronghold of failure. We might have a constant attitude that, “I’m a loser. I never win. Nothing good is going to happen to me.” Whatever that erroneous thought is, capture it and attack it with God’s truth. Attack it with something that Jesus has said. It may be helpful to jot it down and put it on your refrigerator or in your Bible where you can see it often. Truth is a powerful counterattack. We need our mind to be filled with His truth. For example, if we have this stronghold of failure, a Scripture that comes to my mind is, “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me” (see Phil 4:13). Yes, we are losers if we try it by ourselves. Satan will always give us half-truths. Sometimes he will give us ninety-percent truths or ninety-nine percent truths. We need to know Truth. We need to know the Word. We need to know Scripture. And we need to believe it. St. Paul said, “When I am powerless, it is then that I am strong” (2Cor 12:10) and “I can do all things in Him” (see Phil 4:13). Jesus said, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing” (Jn 15:5). This is truth.

Dearest Jesus, Little Infant of Prague, how tenderly You love us! Your greatest joy is to dwell among men and to bestow Your blessing upon us. Though I am not worthy that You should behold me, I feel drawn to You by love because You are kind and merciful and exercise Your almighty power over me. So many who turned to You with confidence have received graces and had their petitions granted. Behold me as I kneel before You, and lay open my heart to You, with its prayers and its hopes. I present to You especially this request (mention your request) Rule over me, dear Infant Jesus, and do with me and mine according to Your holy Will, for I know that in Your Divine Wisdom and love You will arrange everything for the best. Do not withdraw Your hand from me, but protect and bless me forever. I pray You, all-powerful and gracious Infant Jesus, for the sake of Your Sacred Infancy, in the name of Your Blessed Mother Mary who cared for You with such tenderness, and by the greatest reverence with which St. Joseph carried You in his arms, help me in my needs. Make me truly happy with You, sweetest Infant, in time and eternity and I shall thank You forever with all my heart. Amen. Almighty and Everlasting God, Lord of heaven and earth, You revealed Yourself to little ones. Grant, we beg of You, that we who venerate with due honor the sacred mysteries of Your son, the Child Jesus, and imitate His example, may enter the kingdom of heaven which You have promised to little children. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen

O Divine Infant! source of all good, the goodness of Your Heart is infinite, and the bounty of Your little hand immeasurable. Like a river, You pour forth Your gifts over thirsty mankind, and fill us with blessings in time and eternity. If You do not preserve our temporal goods, our industry will be useless and in vain. Almighty Infant, lift Your little hand and bless my temporal possessions; take them under Your powerful protection, and keep them from misfortune and loss. Give me the necessary grace to use my temporal goods according to Your will, to employ myself usefully after Your pleasure, and to give joy to my neighbor through love of You, that I may lay up treasure in heaven, where no thief can enter, nor moth nor dust destroy.
